Still a little fuzzy

Slowly, slower than I'd like, a cohesive line is coming into focus.

That's my goal this time around.  Cohesion.  In the past I designed each piece as an individual and with no concern for how it fit in with the others.  I've learned this is not a good way to go about things.  Especially if you wish to promote your work with an attractive portfolio.  Which I do. 
I'd like to have two or three collections at a time.  Each with a different feel and set of colors.  That's what I'm in the middle of now.  Editing and sorting and choosing.  It's harder this way for sure, but I think it will be worth it.

Sacrifice

I love my magazines.  I love magazines period.  They don't have to be mine.  I keep them forever and ever and whenever my husband or my mother suggest that maybe I get rid of some... well lets just say that no one suggests THAT anymore.

So, what do you think of my new "Keep it Together!" desktop piece? 

This will be on the inside or the reveal.  This piece came into my head a while back.  I sketched it in my journal and there it stayed for months.  But I just keep thinking about it. So tonight I sat down and cut up some  magazines. I hope it turns out and makes this sacrifice worthwhile. 

It's hard to believe it's almost New Year's Eve again.  This year went by fast.

Studio Update

I have three pieces in progress right now... I've been working like a busy little bee:)

I thought I'd show you my design sketch for my next piece.  I'm donating the proceeds from this one to Red Ink Studios in Flint.  The photos a little washed out but hey that's why I'm not a photographer. 

I put the final base coat on all three tonight so it won't be long. Yay!
This is my favorite part of the process- the end when it's finally time to paint the design and it all comes together.  Before I had E I would get so caught up in finishing a piece that I would do nothing else until it was done (read no cleaning, sleeping, ect.)  But one of the surprise blessings of motherhood is forced moderation.  Nothing and I mean Nothing can become all consuming any more.  Which is good because it's been my experience that breaks and moderation make everything better.   A little Dr. Seuss and Olivia don't hurt either :)

On that note I'll leave you with a Dr. Seuss quote from the One Fish Two Fish book, our current favorite. :

"And now good night. It is time to sleep... Today is gone. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one. Every day, from here to there, funny things are everywhere."

I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

That's the album I'm listening to right now.  I love Bright Eyes:)  But it's true I am wide awake and it is morning(very early morning)  I'm excited b/c I just finished two of my "Keep it Together!" desktop pieces.  Well basically finished-I still have to put a protective coat on them and take the photos. But finished enough to see that they turned out exactly as I envisioned them.  That's such a great thing!  I'll get them in my etsy shop soon  carriekim.etsy.com

Greetings from my cozy studio apartment

I finally got my fire started!  Yeah! It only took me an hour:)
Now that it's nice and cozy I thought I would sit down and give this blogging thing a try. 
I'm sooo excited about my new pieces:) My designs seem to be forming into two distinct series- Detroit and Brookside Park.  The Detroit pieces are a bit more detroit than my previous work.  If you don't know what I mean then you'll just have to wait and see.  The brookside park group are more on the happy pop side of things.  I can't wait to get them finished!
I think this blog will be perfect for keeping everyone up to date on my progress. 
So here it is- my first progress report:
November 9th - not much progress today.  I've been messing around on the computer looking at Etsy and this blog stuff too long.  I've got to get to work
